Why Book Pre-sales Matter More Than Most Authors Realise

Once your email list infrastructure is in place, the next critical move is setting up pre-orders and understanding exactly why they are not just a nice-to-have.

Authors often wonder: why does it matter if someone buys the book today versus on launch day? The money is the same either way. But to the algorithms and the bestseller lists, the timing is everything.

Major bestseller lists aggregate all pre-order sales and count them as first-day sales. Bestseller algorithms track velocity: the number of copies sold in the shortest possible window. Selling 5,000 copies spread over a year is great for your bank balance. Selling 5,000 copies on a single Tuesday is what gets you onto a list.

Every pre-order you collect in the weeks before launch is a sale held in reserve, ready to land on day one in one concentrated burst.

How to drive pre-sales effectively:

  • Announce the pre-order to your email list first, before any public announcement. Make subscribers feel like insiders.
  • Offer a pre-sale bonus: a deleted scene, an exclusive Q&A, early access to a companion piece.
  • Set up an automated email sequence so anyone who buys early receives their bonus automatically and is tagged in your system for the post-launch review request.
  • Mention the pre-order link at the end of every piece of content you publish in the run-up. Not as a hard sell, but as a natural signpost.

If you are working with a traditional publisher, your pre-order page will be set up by their team. Your job is to drive traffic to it.
